------> We Object!!

We, the 50 million Koreans, rage against today’s absurd judgment on the 1500m Men’s Short Track
which took the Gold Medal from Dong-Sung Kim’s hands and put it around Ohno’s neck.
Unfortunately, we are well aware that our objection against such decision would not bring the
taken-away medal back to Kim. However, we will be outrageously ashamed of ourselves if we just
sit here watching this unfair “American Version of Justice.”

Today’s happening was not the first time that the whole world witnessed the unfairness of
Saltlake Winter Olympics 2002. First, it was the 5000m Men’s Relay. Rusty Smith of U.S. team had
pushed Ryong Min of Korea and made him collapse. What did the judges do? They raised the arms of
U.S. team. That’s not all. The U.S. brought the suspicion through the press if Min had been
“Really Hurt”, implying that he was pretending to be injured.

On the 17th of Feb., 2002, we had to wipe our eyes and ears thousands of times in disbelief when
we saw the dishonorable game at the semi-final and again at the final of 1000m Men’s Short
track. Anyone who has eyes or even an eye on his face could not possibly deny that Li Jiajun from
China grabbed Dong-Sung Kim’s right shin and made him fall in the semi-final. At the moment, we
had no doubt that Li would be disqualified and Kim would go on to the final. Amazingly, Li’s
dirty behavior received the indulgence from the “BLIND” judges and Kim had to leave the ice
with resentment.

Nevertheless, we still had not thrown our hope away. We had a 16-year-old Hyun-Soo Ahn in the
final. The game finally had started and it didn’t take much long to see that the final was not
different from the semi-final. Li must have believed that he had done a very right thing in the
semi-final. He began pushing and violently touching Anton Ohno, from U.S. Ohno, surprisingly,
fought back, doing exactly the same thing to Li. What we were watching was the ideal example for
“What must NOT be done in the game”, instead of the ”OLYMPICS”. While the two were struggling
with each other, Ahn attempted to outrun them in the inner track. If his ankle had not been
deliberately blocked by Ohno’s hand, he must have been able to melt our fury away with the Gold
Medal around his neck. Thanks to Ohno and Li, everyone in the final race tumbled, except for
Bradbury, who had been running too behind to join the rest. The judges disqualified Li and gave
Silver Medal to Ohno. It was a perfect scenario to give Anton Ohno the
medal. If any one would like to object to this, he or she must erase the memories of everyone who
watched Li and Ohno competing over more foul.

And today, not before a tear-drop could reach my chin from the joy of Dong-Sung Kim’s Gold
Medal, the judges announced Kim’s disqualification. The reason was that “Kim moved into Ohno’s
path, prompting Ohno to throw up his arms ? a cagey move that certainly drew the attention of
the referees.”(quoted from the NBC report) Is it a foul, bad enough to be disqualified, to stay
in his way and keep the leading position? Replay the race as many times as necessary. Anton Ohno’
s speed was not fast enough to outrun Kim. And even if there had been a slight chance that Ohno
was attempting to get to the lead, Kim’s movement was not “blocking Ohno”; he was on his way
to the finish line. I’ve read news reports about Kim’s “highly raised elbows”. Moving the
elbows back and forth is a natural action of humans to gain more speed. Neither Kim’s elbows
touched Ohno nor there is any Short Track regulation, which prohibits the skater to raise the
elbows only to a certain limit. The true reason of Kim’s disqual
ification was that he finished the race before Ohno, and disappointed America.

The rules and regulations for the Short Track race state that :

l Intentionally pushing, obstructing or colliding with another racer calls for the offender's
disqualification. Improperly crossing the course -- cross-tracking -- is also prohibited.
l Lead skater has the right of way and the passing skater must avoid body contact.

Li jiajun, who “intentionally pushed, obstructed or collided with” Kim, on the 17th was not
disqualified and made it to the final. Anton Ohno, who also “intentionally pushed, obstructed or
collided with” both Li Jiajun and Hyun Soo Ahn on the 17th was not disqualified, instead, he won
the Silver Medal. Furthermore, the U.S. news reports, and Americans are reproaching Dong-Sung Kim
today for the fouls that he had never committed, while embracing Ohno, the one who committed
several “body contact of the lead skater, Kim”. How can it be more obvious than this that every
single judgment from the 2002 Saltlake Winter Olympics is done with the desperate effort to
please U.S.? U.S. may celebrate by themselves with all of the above-mentioned and more fouls they
have made. However, they must not justify Anton Ohno’s disgraceful medals by claiming what never
happened has happened.

We do remember the terrorist attack on the Sept. 11th, 2001, in New York. The entire planet of
Earth was shocked and gave all its support to the U.S. who pointed the weapons “Against the
Injustice”. When we advocated U.S. back then, we did not give them the right to re-define
“Justice” into their own version. We’re not angry about the fact that we lost a couple of Gold
Medals. What we are truly mad at is the “American version of justice” which insulted the
dignity of our nation, along with the rest of the “weak”. The great U.S. must acknowledge that
covering the eyes with hands does NOT make the sky disappear. As for the Korean skaters who are
going through all the hardships in Saltlake, we will wipe the tears off their face, with our own
hands. And the U.S. must stop fooling the world.
